In Vancouver, can you recommend a fun, yummy place for dinner on New Year’s Eve?

My girlfriend and I are going to be in Vancouver for the first time over Christmas/New Years. We’re 30, adventurous eaters and looking for a fun, yummy night out.

Any good bars with good rock/indie music would be a big plus! Thanks!

Really depends on what you want and where you are from how much you want to spend… We had an awesome new years a couple years ago at the Atlantic Trap and Gill… lobster dinner and celtic music for $25 per person, dont know if they still do it…

Do you like Seafood? try the FISHHOUSE or the BOATHOUSE near English Bay and Stanley Park…

looking for something really special? Go to the top of Grouse Mountain and eat at the Obervatory…
or The Vancouver Aquarium has a party every year the tickets are expensive but totally worth it!!!

Iron Chef Rob Feenies Restaurant Lumiere is great but a little out of downtown so it you want to carry on it would be a taxi ride…

As well Vancouver is ethnic foodie heaven so if you want just about anything from anywhere chances are you can find it downtown…

Is Vancouver an expensive city to live in?

What are the usual rates for Vancouver appartments downtown? and in the city? nothing crazy, just something simple like a studio or a loft would be cool.Is it anymore expensive then say,Seattle or Portland?

Like most large cities, Vancouver is expensive. I would say it is about equal with Seattle, and a bit more than Portland.

Remember, too, that if you don’t have citizenship in Canada, you will need to get the proper documents to live there.

My hubby and I live in Vancouver, about 12 minutes from the central downtown area by bus. We live in a large basement apt of a private house in a nice residential area and pay $500 a month, all utilities, cable and internet provided, as well as laundry facilities, and have a fenced yard as well, as we have pets.

Rent in the downtown area is more, my husbands son had a small 1 bdrm apt in the downtown core area, for $900 a month plus heat, cable, etc.

So, it depends on what you want, what you will settle for, where you want to live, and how diligent you are in looking for a good deal. I would recommend staying in Vancouver, or maybe Burnaby, just because it’s closer to everything.

Anyway, it IS possible to find good deals that aren’t dumps!
Good luck!
Vancouver is a wonderful place to live.

Vancouver wedding location?

I live in Vancouver, and I’m getting married next May.. problem is, we just can’t find the perfect wedding spot. We want outdoor ceremony, indoor reception, and something… unconventional. No Stanley Park or Queen E or boring hotel wedding… we had wanted the planetarium, but we can’t that weekend… so now what? advice.ideas/personal stories??

Although not very helpful, what about along the beach? Stanley Park is SO huge…unconventional really doesn’t match Stanley Park.

You could do it at Stanley Park and see if the Aquarium could host your reception?

Remember the ceremony will only last about 30 minutes while the reception is much, MUCH longer. Being unique is great, but also look at what you want to be unique. Trying to overdue yourself and go to exotic and unusual locations for everything may overwhelm your guests.

My suggestion: have the ceremony somewhere in Stanley Park (mainly because I think it’s gorgeous) but go somewhere unique for the reception.

…………….

Try at Boundary Bay in Boundary Bay Regional Park, south of Tsawwassen in Greater Vancouver. When I was there I saw a wedding at a lovely house nearby the beach.  You can rent it for on-two days, at summer days do it some weeks ahead, they have a waiting list.

Vancouver Nightlife?

I am planning a trip to Vancouver, Canada, and I was wondering if this city has a good nightlife.

Well I guess it depends on what scene you are into. There are a number of hip/hop dance/pop clubs but there are alot of other alternative nights but they move around and are in smaller venues. Try looking at

or

Have fun.

Vancouver B.C. marijuana Coffee shops?

Im doing a presentation on Tourism in Vancouver and I was wondering if anyone knows where and/or how many marijuana coffee shops there are. Any legit help would be appreciated. Im getting mixed results on internet search engines.

There are quite a few on the “Pot Block” on E Hastings. Pop into one of the cafes (in broad daylight with a friend) and they can tell you how many are around town or direct you to someone who can.

Vancouver BC Night Clubs?

I’m going to Vancouver BC for the weekend and need some suggestions for good night clubs please.

Madisons’ not called that anymore - great place to get shot.
Richards on Richards, s’ok good live shows.

pick up a Georgia Straight, its got the 4-11 on all the club happenings, there’s something for everyone..
as I suggested in your other question the Lotus would be a good spot, ditto for Celebrities or Odyssey. gay-friendly dance bars.

stay offa Granville - LAME! (unless you are a frat boy looking for a fight, or you like those kind of boys) the Granville exception is the Commodore (big live venue)

Can you have pets in Vancouver apartements?

I’m moving away from Winnipeg to Vancouver and leaving all seven of my pets behind. At thirteen years old, its gonna be traumatic enough, but leaving my babies at home is gonna be even harder for me. My option is either buy a pet while I’m in Vancouver or bring one with me when I move. Are pets allowed in Vancouver apartments?

If you can afford to rent a condo here which can be about $1200 for a one bedroom or even studio, some places will let you have a pet. Most places have a pet size limit of under 15lbs. Most places here are not pet friendly and its way easier to sneak a cat in than dog.
You can also rent a basement suite so that might be a bit easier if you can find a pet loving owner.
A pet friendly co-op is another choice but overall Vancouver is not super pet friendly for finding a place to live if you have a budget.

Will I be happy in Vancouver?

I am a native born New York City guy, I am 20 yrs old. My parents are thinking about moving to Vancouver and I was a little worried if I would be happy. I did some searching and Vancouver came up as one of the best cities to live in. Thats good.

But there is so much going on in NYC that you never get bored, there are so many people, so many new places. I wonder if the clubbing scene will be as fun as it is in NYC. These are all questions that worry me.

I will be safer in Vancouver, its cleaner, nicer people, great outdoors. I just dont want to feel that feeling I get after a while of being in the Suburbs. Its great but after a while I need my Time Square fix, lights and buzz.

What you might miss out on with what you could perceive as fewer clubs you will gain back and thensome with other things you simply can’t find in New York. New York for example doesn’t have sandy ocean beaches right in downtown where there’s tons going on like sandcourt volleyball tournaments, beer gardens, etc.

Downtown Vancouver, like Manhattan is alive with people all night long. Vancouver (it is a fact) has the fastest growing downtown core of any city in North America. Why? Its exciting at night! People want to be there! Its the reason why it costs 3/4s of a million dollars for a nicer 2 bedroom condo IF you’re lucky enough to beat the crowds lined up around the block looking to buy one as well. There’s rarely any second looks in Vancouver. They just can’t build buildings fast enough in Vancouver. Demmand is huge. Plus you just can’t beat the weed… nor the women of Kitsilano where I lived for nine years.

Vancouver BC Gay Night Clubs?

Vancouver BC Gay/Lesbian Night Clubs?
I’m going to Vancouver BC for the weekend and need some suggestions for good gay night clubs close to Robson please.

the clubs are all pretty mixed, but if you’re a grrl - I’d say the Lotus in gastown

Celebrities, the Odyssey both in the westend, very mixed more gay man though

Numbers, PumpJack - both cater to the older gay man crowd

you may want to make your way to The Drive, (Commercial Drive) its more of a lesbian hangout, look for info about “flygirl” parties…Robson st is mostly rich tourists (think Rodeo Drive). Davie St is the city’s official “gaybourhood” but the Drive

gastown and westend are both walkable distance from Robson,,but you will probably want to steer clear of Granville St.. which is cheesball meathead frat boy clubbin strip!
