Big transportation and housing challenges in Vancouver BC Canada
An American expert on traffic and planning says the Lower Mainland is facing some big hurdles in the future.Doctor Anthony Downs with Washington, DC’s Brookings Institute says Greater Vancouver is expected to grow by over 700-thousand people and with that comes more traffic and growth on limited landspace.
Downs says congestion is inevitable, “Congestion is an inescapable result of how we organize our society. And I know a lot of you are going to argue with me about this. But before you start into a long argument, show me how else to organize society so we don’t have this problem. Furthermore, congestion is a sign of success, not of failure. It occurs most when many people want to go to the same area at the same time.”
Downs says the biggest “tension” in Greater Vancouver is who decides on regional planning.
