Vancouver public library’s green roof
The city of Richmond now considering so-called “green roofs”. They’re roofs covered in soil and have low-growing plants and grass. They can work on everything from a dog house to big box stores thousands of square metres in size.
Steven Peck with Green Roofs for Healthy Cities says they help capture storm water and reduce green house gases. The City of Port Coquitlam passed the bylaw last December and requires the roofs of new buildings be green if they’re larger than 5,000 square metres.
Richmond Councillor Bill McNulty says they’re looking at the pros and cons. The Vancouver Public Library has had the environmentally friendly option in place since 1995.
