Students of Maple Ridge Secondary warned of possible threat
As shock spread around the world during the Virginia Tech shooting, parents in Maple Ridge received alarming news similar in nature. Students at Maple Ridge Secondary were sent home with a letter yesterday informing families about a possible threat to their school.
It says RCMP received information about the threat on Saturday and immediately searched the entire school and all portables with a canine unit for hours, before declaring the school safe. Seamus Nesling with the school district says the threat was obviously not influenced by what happened at Virginia Tech.
He says they know this is the time of year when the Columbine shooting occurred, so there is just a possibility both incidents had some relationship to that anniversary.
He admits hearing about this threat on the same day as the shooting must have been quite alarming for parents. Nesling says RCMP has assured the district it has dealt with the matter and it does not consider this to be a threat any longer.
