All Vancouver schools will be picket free on Tuesday
Vancouver schools that share buildings with community centres will not be impacted by CUPE pickets. The Vancouver School Board has received that word from the Labour Relations Board after raising concerns about whether pickets would be set up at some school entrances.
The VSB was worried as Britannia Elementary, Britannia Secondary, King George Secondary, Lord Strathcona Elementary, and Thunderbird Elementary all share facilities with community centres that are behind CUPE picket lines.
Parents worry about labour dispute past Labour Day
Vancouver’s municipal strike is six weeks old with no end in sight, and no new talks scheduled. Many parents are worried about how they’ll be affected if the labour dispute drags on past the Labour Day long weekend.
Unless both sides get back to the bargaining table this weekend, it looks like the strike will have a big impact on the back to school rush next week. Rob Morton is the parent of a 16 year old daughter going to Magee Secondary in Kerrisdale. He says the school is scrambling to find space for its outdoor sports programs. Morton says the fall soccer schedule hasn’t been posted yet and the fields aren’t suitable for playing on.
To add to the complications, most city run daycares are behind picket lines, forcing parents to make other arrangements for their young children.
