Motorists should take notice — the Granville Street entertainment district will be closed to vehicle traffic tonight and tomorrow night.
Granville between Helmcken and Smithe will be shut down to cars between 9 p-m and 4 a-m.
Constable Tim Fanning says Vancouver police hope the move will help cut down on trouble with long weekend party goers.
“I think literally there’s more elbow room down there. People can walk in the streets because the streets are closed. You don’t have the people that have had a couple of drinks bumping into other people.”
Fanning says the closures have been done in the past with excellent results.
Many people are relaxing at home this long weekend
The PNE, enjoying a glass of wine in the hot tub or rollerblading in Stanley Park are among your list of activities this Labour Day.
Despite most of you saying you’re going to spend the last long weekend of the summer at home, border lines are still long at both the Peace Arch and Pacific Highway crossings. Ferries from Tsawwassen to the Southern Gulf Islands are full for the rest of the day.
Vancouver Police will be stepping up traffic enforcement so take it easy on the roads. They’ll be closing the Granville strip tonight and tomorrow in an effort to curb the rowdies.
The good news is the weather, it will stay dry this weekend. Keep it locked on News1130, we’ll keep you informed with traffic alerts and traffic and weather together every ten minutes on the ones.
