Vancouver businesses want dumpsters removed

They may be a lifeline for homeless bottle collectors in Vancouver’s downtown core, but dumpsters are considered such a nuisance by some city businesses that they want to see them eliminated.
In keeping with that goal, the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association recently surveyed the contents of dumpsters in its 90-block jurisdiction.
It found that the vast majority were filthy, vandalized and filled with needles.
“That’s going to tell people that are intent on committing crime that nobody cares about this particular area and let’s continue to do what we do,” said Charles Gauthier, the business association’s executive director.
Gauthier said businesses in Seattle and Kelowna, B.C., have attempted to solve the problem by separating their trash and having it picked up a number of times throughout the day. In some commercial districts of those cities, dumpster trash is never left out overnight.
However, a former Vancouver dumpster diver says the removal of large waste receptacles from the downtown core could create problems for people who make a living by selling bottles that are collected from dumpsters.
