A-Maze-Ing Laughter, by Yue Minjun

A-Maze-Ing Laughter, by Yue Minjun

A new work in patinated bronze by Chinese artist Yue Minjun. Installed as part of Vancouver Biennale 2009-2011. A fascinating work, a lot of people were stopping to look and it was certainly bringing out a lot of laughter and giggles.

From the inscription:

"Yue Minjun uses his own iconic face in a state of hysterical laughter as a signature trademark. Recognized universally as a sign of happiness, the 'smile' raises questions of intent and interpretation.

One of the most influential contemporary artists in China, Yue Minjun represents the new wave of Chinese artistic freedom. 'SHI XIANG SHENG' marks Yue Minjun's Canadian debut."

Lady of the River

Jun Ren's Water #10, part of the Vancouver Biennale and the sister piece of one of my favourites, Freezing Water #7 graces the banks of the Fraser River in Richmond near the UBC Boathouse.

While still a large piece, it nowhere approaches the grandeur of Freezing Water #10, nor is it's setting as spectacular. As you move around the piece though, it reveals a variety of hidden shapes not obvious on first glance.

Olympus XA, Kodak Ektar 100.

Technical note, I think my scanner may be having issues. Not happy at all with the scans I got tonight, will have to investigate further if it's the film or the scanner. Perhaps it's time to upgrade as I'm certainly shooting more and more film.

Off Kilter

Finally got out to Garry Point in Steveston to see Yvonne Domenge's 'Olas de Vienoto' or Wind Waves, part of the Vancouver Biennale. Lovely sculpture in a near perfect setting. This should stay here, couldn't imagine a better place for it.

Was feeling a bit off kilter after riding the dike there with my bike tires a little low on air though so, this was the result.

Sliding Edge, by Nancy Chow

Sliding Edge, by Nancy Chow

Public art along the Coal Harbour waterfront.

From the City of Vancouver Public Art Registry:

Along the seawall is a rough yet elegant waterfall of black rundle stone: the stacked, linear, irregular stone edges are abstractions of geological layers… Standing on top of the waterfall is an iconic, enigmatic human figure - man in the landscape, poised between the earth and the sky." The text is from a poem by Earle Birney, November Walk Near False Creek Mouth. Along Hastings Street is another waterfall and black stone benches are scattered along the pool edge. Cast Iron tree grates are shaped like saw blades to remind viewers of the historic use of the area.

Artist Statement:
"Sliding Edge" alludes to the always moving edge of the waterfront, the sea sliding in and out on the tides, the waves lapping, the shifting of the earth's edge, the changes over time. This work refers to the site's natural and industrial context, to ideas of nature and culture."
