Woodland Corner

Such a breath of freshness in the woodland where fences made from fallen trees within the park blend with new spring growth.

Gift Through Time

Gift Through Time

Until the 2006 hurricane, this lovely old catalpa tree sheltered us in its shade and amazed with its beauty. We had thought it lost, but now it's a source of delight to countless kids (and their families) who can't wait to climb it from a new perspective!

No Age Limit!

No Age Limit!

About 15 minutes walk from the catalpa tree in the previous shot is a wonderful, gnarled old tree boasting cherry blossoms and.... a whole crop of happy teenagers, enjoying themselves every bit as much as the little kids. The early Spring weather has touched everyone!

Reaching for the Sun

Reaching for the Sun

Back in January, the whole magnolia tree was heavy with what looked like pussy willows. By the end of February, warmth and sunlight coaxed them into opening, to reveal magnolia buds, all ready for spring.

The Treasure Within

The Treasure Within

I'm always impressed how many luxuriant petals are tucked in one narrow bud - it only takes a little sunlight to bring out their full glory. Magnolia stellata flowers almost look like water lilies as they open.

Star Magnolia

Star Magnolia

The trees are covered with white magnolia blossoms that we don't usually see until May! A bit of suspense this week when the weather forecasters mentioned....lower temperatures and maybe even....snow flurries. "After all, it's still winter!" they say. Yes, but the magnolias don't know that!!

View of Stanley Park , Coal Harbour and the Convention Centre from Mike and Alba's suite at the Pacific Rim Hotel at the Blue Hour this evening.

The Olympic Cauldron visible in the courtyard of the Convention Centre. Too bad they didn't have the suite last weekend (apparently Richard Branson was staying in it). Nobody left in town now though.

Early Spring this year for sure

Early Spring this year for sure

This photo was taken yesterday, March 5. The big willow trees on Lost Lagoon are nearly in full bloom, and early too. For an idea on how early spring is this year here, see this photo I took of the same tree last year, on March 12th:

Another glorious day ends on the West Coast

Sun dips beneath the horizon as a freighter waits and a helicopter circles. Another fine day on the West Coast comes to a close.

A rich tapestry of Camelia

A rich tapestry of Camelia

Oozing luxury in the dying light of the day, it's a big bush of red Camelia flowers (Thanks Eric!). I really must learn what more of these are. These were at the Stanley Park Administrative Offices on English Bay.
