More than 200 restaurants from Whistler to White Rock are joining forces today in the fight against AIDS. It’s called “Dining Out for Life”, and the event will see 25% of all food proceeds donated to the Friends for Life and Loving Spoonful charities.Last year, more than $165,000 were raised. For a full list of participating restaurants, check out www.diningoutforlife.com
What is Dining Out for Life? Dining Out For Life® is an annual fundraising event involving the generous participation of volunteers, corporate sponsors and restaurants. In exchange for their financial support, restaurants are listed in a city wide marketing campaign in an effort to increase customer traffic.
In 1991 Dining Out For Life® was created by an ActionAIDS volunteer in Philadelphia. In 1993, ActionAIDS made it an international event offering licenses to AIDS Service Organizations around the country. Since Dining Out for Life International’s founding the event has grown throughout North America and is now produced in over 33 cities.
The Board of Dining Out For Life® is constantly working to expand the number of licenses around the country, as well as to gain sponsorships that benefit the entire country. On average two to three cities a year are being added.
More than 2,500 restaurants a year donate a portion of their proceeds from this one special night of dining to the licensed agency in their city. Over $2 million dollars a year is raised to support the missions of agencies throughout North America. With the exception of the annual licensing fee of $600, all money raised in these cities stays there.

Joseph Wu has been folding paper since he was three years old.
That’s a lot of paper cranes. And rabbits and dragons and frogs and roosters and swans and cellular phones and Volkswagen Beetles.
Wu, who played a lot of Dungeons and Dragons as a kid and was trained as a scientist, is parlaying his early childhood fascination with origami into a successful career as an artist and commercial illustrator. He takes a sculptor’s approach to paper folding, pressing hard on the technical limits of what this ancient Japanese craft can accomplish, and the intellectual freight it can be made to carry.
His innovations have earned him international recognition and a steady income from clients such as Volkswagen, Intel, the Nagano Olympics, Stolichnaya Vodka and many other recognized brands.
He has become a celebrity in the world of origami, with one of the Internet’s most-visited origami sites (www.origami.as). His commitment to origami as an art form won him a commission to create an origami-themed play for the spring of 2008, tentatively entitled The Life of Paper. Increasingly, he has to rattle a legal sabre at commercial imitators attempting to pass off his designs as their own.

Vancouver based Executive Search Dating (ESD) revealed 3 reasons why meeting new people in Vancouver is so difficult. Although the Spring dating season is now upon us, and the days are longer, Vancouver singles often complain that meeting new people in the city is hard going. The fact that Vancouverites are reluctant to approach strangers in social settings, and spend more time outdoors and less time in traditional indoor social settings tops the list of reasons.
“Although Spring is in the air, the weather is nicer and the days longer, many busy Vancouverites still find meeting new people in the city challenging,” says Paddi Rice, President and Founder of Executive Search Dating. “New arrivals to Vancouver often complain that people don’t approach them to greet them as often as happens in other, larger cities such as Toronto and New York. This creates a ripple effect as Vancouverites tend to stick to their existing social networks and don’t often meet new people.”
Executive Search Dating revealed 3 reasons why meeting new people in Vancouver is difficult:
- Vancouverites don’t often approach strangers.
- Vancouverites spend more time outdoors and less time indoors in traditional meeting places.
- Vancouver professionals work long hours, leaving less time for socializing.

A company in Richmond that sells cheap drugs over the internet is now under investigation by the BC College of Pharmacists.Canada Drug Pharmacy isn’t registered with the College and sells drugs through a variety of websites. The company told the Vancouver Sun it doesn’t need to be registered because it doesn’t supply the drugs itself.
Canada Drug Pharmacy wouldn’t name the suppliers it does use, but insists they are licensed. The debate over online drugs exploded this week on the news a woman in BC died of poisoning after taking pills she bought on the internet.

The British Columbia Public Interest Advocacy Centre (BCPIAC) is a non-profit, public interest law office. Its creation in 1981 reflected the fundamental belief that it should not only be the rich and powerful that are represented before our courts and regulators. For those bodies to function as they should, they must hear from all of those affected by their decisions. Our task is to provide representation to groups that would not otherwise have the resources to effectively assert their interests.

The women of the Zulu nation used to earn pennies selling their handcrafted artwork at the side of the road. Now these industrious women earn enough to ensure the survival of their families, their communities and their culture.
Through a co-op designed to facilitate the empowerment of the Zulu women , they can now sell their hand woven baskets and beadwork around the world. Not only does this endeavor help them to support their families, it gives the women a sense of control over their own destinies.
While living in South Africa, the owner of Patriot Imports had the opportunity to interact with the women of the Zulu nation. When she immigrated to Canada, a strong desire to help these women came with her. This desire led to the creation of Patriot Imports Inc.
Today, Patriot Imports helps facilitate the empowerment of over 2000 Zulu people. This is achieved by importing and selling the traditional hand-woven baskets and beadworks from the province of Kwazulu Natal, South Africa.

Videos on the web can be misinterpreted
The video of a bust by Vancouver Police on YouTube has now had over 12,000 hits. Watch the clip, called “Vancouver Police Brawl”, and you may get the wrong impression. This is what’s troubling most people on the street today. Sites like YouTube let you tell a story your way, even if it’s not the whole story.
In the case of the weekend bust in Vancouver, which is still floating in cyberspace, one man says you can’t dispute the pictures. He says you wouldn’t want to jump to conclusions but in that video, it’s evident what’s going on.
However, others aren’t so sure, and they point out you don’t see what led police to respond with batons. While you may not be able to dispute the pictures, they can be misinterpreted.
The YouTube video clip (link below) shows police officers struggling on the ground with two men. Firefighters in full gear stand around them, and at one point, another officer runs over and appears to hit someone with a baton a couple of times. Chow confirms the YouTube video is of the Vancouver incident.
You can watch it on YOUTUBE under the name Vancouver 3/17/07 Police Brawl
