A North Shore aboriginal fashion designer is hoping to take her business to new heights just in time for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Pam Baker is the owner and founder of Touch of Culture Legends, a local fashion design company whose vision is to express First Nations heritage through the visual arts displayed on its designs.
One of Baker’s focuses right now is the expansion of Touch of Culture’s offerings, which currently include dressy and sportswear pieces, to include handbags and a soon-to-be-unveiled accessories line. Her intention is that these pieces will be picked up by visitors in the lead up to and during the 2010 Games.
Baker has designed two types of bags: for interested fashionistas, she has designed four high-end limited-edition black and red leather offerings; and for the more souvenir-minded wearers, she has designed an affordable line of faux leather wallets and circle bags.
“They reflect both my tribes,” she says. For all of her pieces, Baker calls on her mother’s (Kwakiutl) and her father’s (Coast Salish) heritage as inspiration. Baker is currently working on the marketing of the bags and so far they’ve been picked up by BC Ferries and Park Royal Shopping Centre.

“The Recycling Council of British Columbia is a multi-sectoral non-profit organization promoting the principles of Zero Waste through information services, the exchange of ideas and research.”
The Recycling Council of BC (RCBC) is all about reducing waste. Founded in 1974, RCBC is Canada’s oldest recycling council. From expansion of the beverage container deposit-refund program, to establishing programs for post-consumer paint, pesticides and electronic waste, RCBC has led BC’s progressive policy of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program development.
RCBC members include governments, businesses, non-profit organizations and interested individuals all working towards B.C.’s long-term sustainability. We are proud of who we are, what we’ve accomplished, and where we are heading down the road to Zero Waste.
RCBC promotes the exchange of ideas and information through its annual conference and special events such as Waste Reduction Week.
Each year, RCBC’s Recycling Hotline answers more than 120,000 questions about pollution prevention, recycling and waste reduction.
The RCBC Materials Exchange (MEX), promotes reuse through a network of free-to-use web sites, such as Vancouver.reuses.com and Surreyreuses.com, that offer items and list events, such as garage sales.

Vancouver Electric Vehicle Association
VEVA started meeting in 1985 and formed as a non-profit society in 1987 to promote the development of clean alternative transportation with a focus on Electric Vehicles. While our membership is drawn largely from the lower mainland we have members from all over BC as well as other provinces and states. Many of our members have built electric vehicles including passenger cars and bicycles. We meet monthly to discuss current events, projects under development and to plan for various events which we attend each year promoting the concepts of clean alternative transportation.
