AWARE of Whistler

Whistler’s best-known environmental organization has come a long way from advocating a resort-wide recycling program in 1989 to stating its opposition to the planned “legacy” ski trails in the Callaghan Valley in 2007.
The Association of Whistler Area Residents for the Environment (AWARE) is no longer a fringe group and has transitioned into a respected part of the community.
Over the years, AWARE has been active on many environmental and sustainability issues in the valley, advocating for the preservation of unprotected areas, for example. The group has acted as a community watchdog and an environmental advocate.
Moving towards the 2010 Winter Olympics and beyond, AWARE’s primary mandate remains the protection of the environment. AWARE will continue to advocate for protection of the environment and wilderness areas, especially the Soo Valley. AWARE leaders see a sensible, balanced approach to environmental sustainability as the only option moving forward, from both an environmental and economic point of view.
AWARE invites all interested Whistler residents and members of the business community to attend their AGM next Wednesday (April 25) at 7 p.m. at the Westin Resort and Spa. The meeting will feature a keynote address by Dr. Brian Nattrass, co-founder of The Natural Step Canada, founder of Sustainability Partners Inc. and the author of The Natural Step for Business: Wealth, Ecology and the Evolutionary Corporation. Dr. Nattrass will discuss ways Whistler can meet the challenge of adapting to the planet’s increasing shortage of natural capital. New board members will also be elected.
