Green Works in Vancouver

GreenWorks Building Supply, the city’s first environmentally friendly home-improvement store, is changing the way Vancouverites live.
From natural clay plasters to water-conserving toilets, the one-stop shop carries a broad range of building supplies for environmentally conscious, style-savvy homeowners and builders.
A trip to GreenWorks tests your perceptions. The sleek kitchen countertops look and feel like stone, but are, in fact, made of resin-coated, pressed recycled paper.
The UltraTouch brand of wall insulation material resembles conventional fibreglass, but is actually spun from scraps left over from the commercial production of blue jeans.
The durable wool carpets for sale completely biodegrade after they outlive their usefulness, and the locally made, decorative tiles were once glass bottles.
“People have been struggling to find stuff that is green or healthy, and you can find it if you’re really putting a lot of energy into it. But what we’re trying to do here is put it all under one roof,” says Alastair Moore, who founded GreenWorks with his friend Pete McGee.
Each wall of the small, brightly lit shop is neatly lined with product displays and samples. Moore and McGee plan to set up in-store models of fully finished kitchens or bathrooms to show how the products might look when used at home.
The selection of supplies available at GreenWorks is an indication of how mainstream green products have become.
And the swell of customer interest the store has received in its first two months is another encouraging sign, Moore says. “There was a pent-up demand for sure.”
