More and more athletes are donating their time and resources to engaging youth in sport and healthy living. This is because they believe sport can play a role in development of life skills and the ability to make more sustainable choices. VANOC fully shares this view.

The evolution of Olympic and Paralympic values, from their initial focus on the practice of sport as a human right to a movement where sport can play a role in the development of humankind, is broadening the legacy dimension of the Games.

The 2010 Games Operating Trust
Shortly after Vancouver was awarded the right to host the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, our Games partners established a Trust to provide funding support for the operating and capital maintenance costs of certain legacy facilities being constructed for the Games, including the Richmond Oval, the Whistler Sliding Centre and the Whistler Nordic Venue. This Trust will also fund continued development of high-performance sport at the legacy facilities, and across Canada.

The Games Operating Trust was endowed with $110 million, with a 50 per cent contribution from both the Province of British Columbia and the Government of Canada. Interest on this capital has since grown the Games Operating Trust to approximately $131 million.

When it comes to the sustainability legacy of our Games, our focus to date has been on upgrading or building venues that will meet the competition needs of athletes in 2010 and have long-term community and sport uses after the Games. These facilities will allow continued development of high-performance athletes and provide ongoing recreational sport for both able-bodied people and for people with disabilities.

A summary of the current sustainability attributes of the venues and villages as well as details on how the venues will be operated post Games can be found here.
