Crush of wannabe volunteers swamps 2010 Olympics site
Hundreds of thousands of people swamped the website of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games today after Olympic organizers began accepting applications for volunteers.Within hours of going live first thing this morning, Vanoc had received more than 1,500 applications from more than a dozen countries and every province and territory in Canada.
But by mid-afternoon, Vanoc was reeling from all the attention, with more than 700,000 separate page views of its website at vancouver2010.com.
That’s nearly double the number of page views Vanoc had received to date on its heaviest traffic days, CEO John Furlong said. More than 4,000 people living in 24 countries had filed applications by mid-afternoon, and the rate showed no sign of slowing down. However, the website stood up to the traffic load.
Vanoc welcomed the attention, saying it’s a good start to its search for at least 25,000 qualified volunteers.
